   "Mishaal Atheer is an Iraqi American sculptor and visual artist based in the California Bay Area. Working primarily in bronze and drawing, he explores human connection, memory, displacement, and belonging. His abstract figurative practice brings the influence of ancient Mesopotamian art into dialogue with his lived experiences in Iraq and the United States. His work also extends to ceramics, offering another means of exploring form and texture.",
   "Born in Basra, Iraq, in 1978, Atheer earned a diploma in sculpture from the Art Institute in Basra and a bachelor’s degree in Sculpture/Fine Arts from the University of Baghdad. His early career included antiquities reconstruction, teaching sculpture at the Art Institute in Baghdad, and co-founding a studio that produced public art commissions for private collectors and municipalities.",
   "Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Atheer endured years of violent conflict, repeated threats to his life, and the loss of personal and artistic freedom. In 2007, he was forced to flee Iraq to save his life, seeking refuge in Amman, Jordan. There, he began rebuilding his life and artistic practice, presenting the solo exhibition Sculpture Codes and its Continuance at Foresight Gallery. These experiences of survival and displacement continue to inform his exploration of memory, vulnerability, and belonging.",

  "I am an Iraqi American sculptor working primarily in bronze. I spent 28 years of my life in Iraq, left in 2007 due to the post-war terror, and have been living in the California Bay Area for 8 years now. While not by my choice, this drastic move has given me the opportunity to experience two quite different places and people as my home. In my work, I express the universal nature of human relationships with each other, while acknowledging the specific aspects of the places that shaped them, and that shaped me.",
  "I use abstract figures in order to give these statues a universal quality. Frequently, these figures come in groups; they are couples or families, and I often let them share a body or link them physically. With this, I try to capture the universal constants that exist everywhere: family, romantic love, friendship. My figures also reflect Iraq: they are often standing on their feet, but they are static, without a sense of motion, to reflect the limitations I felt growing up in a dictatorship. The shape of the legs, shoulders, and arms in most of my figures is influenced by ancient Mesopotamian art. I feel that I am a continuation of these ancient artists.",
